Unlike testnets, where developers validate code using non-valuable tokens, the mainnet operates with real assets and real consequences for participants. A mainnet launch marks the point at which a blockchain project transitions from testing to live production—ready for full use by end users, validators, developers, and other ecosystem participants. In some ecosystems, the mainnet may be enhanced by sidechains—separate compatible blockchains designed to reduce the load on the mainnet, speed up transactions, or provide additional functionality.
