Fan tokens: how fans gained a voice and what cryptocurrencies have to do with it

Advanced Hype Crypto for newbies Crypto trading
Voting on a kit design, choosing music for the stadium, or attending a meet-and-greet with players — fan tokens offer holders all these opportunities. We explain how these assets work, why their price depends on more than just a team’s performance, and which projects lead this segment.
The cryptocurrency market has long expanded beyond Bitcoin, stablecoins, and payment services. Today, it comprises more than 200 segments — from blockchain infrastructure projects to digital assets designed for supporters of a particular football club.
This is how fan tokens emerged. Clubs and sports organizations use them to strengthen their relationship with audiences, while fans get a chance to feel a little closer to their favorite team. However, along with club-related privileges, they also acquire an extremely volatile crypto asset whose value can change by tens of percent within a short period.

What are fan tokens?

Fan tokens are digital assets that sports clubs, esports teams, music groups, and various brands issue on a blockchain.
Unlike a conventional season ticket or fan card, a fan token can be stored in a cryptocurrency wallet, bought, sold, and, in some cases, used across different blockchain applications.
However, a fan token does not make a supporter a co-owner of the club. It does not provide entitlement to a share of profits, influence over transfer decisions, or full participation in managing the organization. Essentially, it is a digital pass into the club’s ecosystem with an additional market component.
CoinMarketCap and CoinGecko primarily classify tokens issued by sports organizations—especially football clubs and national teams—under this category. As of August 2026, more than 60 such assets are available on the market.
Despite the famous names of the clubs involved, the fan token segment itself remains relatively small. According to CoinGecko, its total market capitalization is about $142 million. Only a few projects have surpassed the $10 million mark.

What does a fan token holder get?

The main argument for fan tokens isn't their potential price appreciation, but access to opportunities unavailable to ordinary fans.
Depending on the club, fan token holders may be able to:
  • participate in voting;
  • gain access to VIP areas;
  • meet players and team representatives;
  • participate in contests and giveaways;
  • purchase limited-edition merchandise;
  • receive special rewards;
  • unlock exclusive content.
In practice, fans have been invited to choose stadium music, the design of club merchandise, the appearance of the team bus, the wording on the captain’s armband, and even a charitable initiative.
This may sound almost like participating in the club’s management, but there is an important limitation: the organization itself determines the subjects of these votes. Naturally, matters involving team selection, transfers, budgets, and sporting strategy are not put to a vote among token holders.
Therefore, the real value of fan tokens depends on how appealing the offered privileges are. If a club regularly holds votes, organizes meetings, and develops its loyalty program, its fan token may remain in demand. If everything is limited to a couple of symbolic polls, the initial interest quickly fades.

Why a fan token’s price does not always celebrate the team’s victories

It seems logical: the team wins, and its fan token rises in value. In practice, however, this relationship does not always hold.
Several factors can influence fan token prices at the same time:
  • match and major tournament results;
  • transfers of famous players;
  • the launch of new privileges;
  • listings on major exchanges;
  • marketing campaigns;
  • the number of tokens in circulation;
  • liquidity;
  • the overall state of the cryptocurrency market.
A fan token’s price often rises before an important match, while traders are still anticipating a positive result. After the event, they begin selling the asset—even if the team wins. This is the classic market scenario of “buy the rumor, sell the news.”
Another distinctive feature is that most fan tokens have a small market capitalization and relatively low liquidity. A large purchase can quickly push a fan token’s price up, while a major sale can cause it to collapse just as rapidly. For this reason, the difference between the buying and selling prices of some assets can be quite substantial.
Ultimately, a fan token serves two roles at once. For a supporter, it is a way to gain additional experiences and become closer to the club. For a trader, it is a speculative asset sensitive to news, hype, and market sentiment.

The leading projects in the fan token market

Chiliz (CHZ): infrastructure for digital fans

Chiliz stands apart from the other participants in this segment. CHZ is not the token of a particular club but the native asset of the blockchain ecosystem on which many sports tokens are issued.
The Chiliz team created Socios.com — a platform through which clubs interact with supporters and conduct Fan Token Offerings, or FTOs. In essence, this is an initial offering of club tokens.
Socios.com works with more than 70 sports organizations. These include football clubs and national teams, esports teams, motorsport competitors, and representatives of other disciplines.
CHZ was once one of the most prominent assets on the cryptocurrency market. In March 2021, its price reached $0.87, while its market capitalization exceeded $4 billion.
By August 2026, the situation looked far more modest: CHZ traded at about $0.012, with a market capitalization of more than $130 million. The asset had lost over 98% of its value from its all-time high.
The 2022 crypto industry crisis dealt a serious blow to the project. The market later recovered, but CHZ never returned to its previous highs.

VATRENI: the croatian national team token that waited a long time for its moment

The Croatian Football Federation Token, or VATRENI, was launched by the Croatian Football Federation in December 2022.
The token gives supporters of the Croatian national team access to special events, limited-edition merchandise, and other privileges.
For its first three years, the asset attracted almost no attention. The situation changed in 2025, when growth in the cryptocurrency market renewed interest in small and niche projects.
Since being listed on exchanges, VATRENI has gained more than 2,000%. Its price approached $1.10, while its market capitalization neared $20 million. This placed the asset among the largest representatives of the segment.
VATRENI’s story shows how a fan token can go unnoticed for a long time and then rise sharply because of market optimism, sporting events, and limited supply.

Atletico Madrid fan token (ATM): giving fans a voice on the blockchain

The token of Spanish club Atlético Madrid was launched on the Chiliz blockchain in June 2020. The project was subsequently expanded to the Solana and Base networks.
ATM holders can participate in club votes, earn rewards, attend special events, meet players, and qualify for VIP treatment.
In August 2026, ATM traded at about $1.52, with a market capitalization of $13.5 million.
At the height of interest in sports tokens, the picture looked very different. In May 2021, ATM’s price reached $58.46. Since then, the asset has lost more than 97% of its value.
The club-related privileges may have remained available to fans, but purchasing the token at its peak proved extremely unsuccessful for investors. This is one of the clearest examples of how far a fan token’s price can diverge from the popularity of the brand behind it.

OG fan token (OG): esports plays by the same rules

Fan tokens are issued not only by football clubs. OG was launched in June 2020 and is associated with OG Esports, one of the best-known esports organizations in the world.
The fan token’s functionality remains relatively limited. However, brand recognition and a loyal community help OG remain among the category’s largest assets.
In August 2026, the fan token was worth about $2.50, and its market capitalization was $12.1 million.
OG reached its all-time high in September 2025, climbing to $24.78. Its price then fell by almost 90%. Even an active community could not protect the fan token from a sharp market correction.

FIGHT: a bet on the UFC audience

FIGHT is one of the youngest participants in the ranking. The fan token was launched in early 2026, initially on the Solana network and later added to BNB Chain.
The project is part of the ecosystem of the same name, which collaborates with the UFC and targets mixed martial arts fans. Its objective is to introduce sports audiences to digital assets and blockchain services.
FIGHT holders are offered access to events, special merchandise, and other opportunities within the ecosystem.
After listing on exchanges, the fan token quickly rose to about $0.03, while its market capitalization approached $50 million. However, the initial hype was short-lived: the surge was followed by a sharp decline.
By August 2026, FIGHT’s price had fallen to nearly $0.004, while its market capitalization had dropped to $8.17 million. The fan token had lost more than 87% from its peak.

How 2026 revitalized the fan token market

The year’s main event for the segment was the FIFA World Cup. The attention of millions of fans was focused not only on the matches but also on the fan tokens of clubs and national teams.
Against this backdrop, new projects entered the market. For example, the initial offering of the Spanish national team’s fan token, SPAIN, took place on June 19, 2026.
At the same time, Chiliz began expanding fan tokens beyond its own network more actively. Chiliz Chain remains the center of the ecosystem, but certain assets are also becoming available on Solana and Base.
For projects, this provides an opportunity to reach new audiences and gain additional liquidity. For users, it offers more options for storing, exchanging, and using fan tokens, including through DeFi services. Faster, cheaper transactions may also be an added advantage.

Victory through burning: how Burn to Glory Works

For the World Cup, Chiliz launched the Burn to Glory campaign, linking national teams’ results to the supply of their fan tokens.
Five national teams and their fan tokens participated in the program:
  • ARG — the Argentina national team fan token;
  • BELG — the Belgium fan token;
  • POR — the Portugal fan token;
  • SAFA — the South Africa fan token;
  • SFA — the Scotland fan token.
After each victory, a portion of a national team's fan tokens was permanently burned. During the group stage, the burn volume started at 1% of the treasury reserve and then increased as the team advanced through the tournament. The largest fan token burn was scheduled for a win in the final.
Users’ assets remained untouched: tokens were removed only from the project’s reserve.
The logic behind this mechanism is simple. The better the team performs, the smaller the fan token's total supply becomes. If demand remains stable, the resulting scarcity could support the price.
The key word here is “theoretically.” Burning reduces supply but does not automatically create demand. If the audience loses interest in the project, even reducing the number of fan tokens does not guarantee an increase in their value.

Fan tokens: souvenirs or investment assets?

Fan tokens combine sports, digital technology, and cryptocurrency speculation. For a devoted supporter, they serve as an interactive club membership: a chance to vote, receive rewards, buy rare merchandise, or attend a private event.
However, treating such an asset as a reliable investment is much harder. Most leading fan tokens trade 87–98% below their all-time highs. Their small market capitalization, limited liquidity, and dependence on the news cycle make them particularly risky.
Even a famous name on the badge does not protect a fan token from falling in value. Its price is influenced not only by the team’s success but also by the state of the broader cryptocurrency market, developer activity, the token’s availability on exchanges, and the project’s ability to keep the audience’s attention.
Therefore, before making a purchase, it is worth assessing not only the club’s popularity but also the fan token’s practical utility: what privileges it provides, how regularly they can be used, and whether an active community exists around the project.
Ultimately, the best way to view a fan token is as a digital souvenir with additional features. Its price may rise, but even the most decorated club cannot promise its supporters victory on the investment field.
